SUST suspends 4 BCL men for harassing girl, attacking journos
Four students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology were suspended for a semester yesterday after they were found guilty of harassing a young girl and attacking journalists on the university campus.
All the four students are activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Sust unit.
Mahmudul Hasan Rudra of Social Work department and Sajjad Hossain Riyad of Statistics department were suspended for stalking and Rahat Siddiqui of Anthropology department and Sumon Sarkar Jony of Political Studies department were suspended for an attack on journalists.
Rahat and Jony were also fined one thousand taka each while the university authorities handed out warnings to Sanjibon Chakrabarty Partho, president of the university's BCL unit for not handling the matter seriously.
Jahir Uddin, proctor of Sust, told The Daily Star that the decision was taken at a syndicate meeting on Saturday afternoon considering the probe body's report on the incidents that was submitted on June 4.
On April 8 this year, a school girl from Sylhet went to the university campus for sightseeing when some BCL activists teased and harassed her.
Two campus journalists protested the matter.
The girl filed a complained with the proctor of the university in this regard.
Later that day, the BCL activists attacked the two journalists, leaving Syed Nabiul Alam Dipu, vice president of Sust Press Club, and Sardar Abbas, general secretary of Sust Press Club, critically injured.
Next day, the university authorities formed a probe body headed by Prof Dr Jahir Bin Alam and the probe body found the BCL activists' guilty and recommended punishment.
On April 12, the girl's mother filed a case with a Sylhet court accusing Sanjibon, Mahmudul, Sajjad and 5 others for the harassment.
On May 21, the court asked for a judicial inquiry of the incident. Later, it issued an arrest warrant for Sanjibon though no one has been arrested yet.
