Five girls raped across country
Holding her husband hostage at knife-point, five men have gang-raped a 20-year-old woman at Bandar upazila in Narayanganj, police said, quoting the couple.
The incident happened on Sunday night when the couple was heading home in Ispahani area from nearby Sabdi, said Shaheen Mondal, officer-in-charge of Bandar Model Police Station.
All of a sudden, five criminals on a motorbike waylaid them near Sabdi Bridge. They forced the husband and the wife into a vehicle and took them to an isolated place in Selsardi where the woman was gang-raped, he said, quoting the couple.
Hearing her screams, locals rushed to the scene, caught one of the alleged rapists, Tuhin, and handed him over to police.
Later, the woman was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for medical examination. Yesterday evening, she filed a rape case against five people, including Tuhin, with Bandar Police Station.
The other suspects were Amjad, Kadir, Bappy and Raihan, all auto drivers, aged between 20 to 25 years, from Selsardi and Sabdi areas. They are now on the run, according to the case statement. The husband of the woman is also an auto-rickshaw driver.
Meanwhile, police in Feni recovered the body of a 14-year-old girl from a pond on Sunday night. Later, they arrested the prime suspect, Sohel, 22.
Around 7:00pm, Asma Aktar, the victim, went to fetch water from a well behind her house. After waiting for her to return home for a long time, her mother, with the help of others, set out to find her.
They first found her shoes on a road near her house. Hours later, her scarf was found on the bank of a pond in which her body was floating.
After they informed police, her body was recovered around 11:30pm and sent to Feni Sadar Hospital for postmortem. Doctors said the body bore injury marks that indicated she was raped before being murdered.
In another incident, two minor girls were raped in Gaibandha.
A class-II student in Madha Kanchipara village in Fulchhari upazila was raped in a bamboo bush on Sunday, allegedly by Nayon Mia, 22, one of her neighbours, police said quoting the girl's family.
Hearing her screams, relatives rushed to the spot and found her unconscious. The rapist had already fled, police said.
She was taken to Fulchhari Health Complex and later shifted to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital.

PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED GIRL 'RAPED'
In Bogra, a physically challenged girl was allegedly raped for months. A case has been filed with Bogra Sadar Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
The incident came to light when the girl was discovered to be 25 weeks pregnant, the mother said, adding her daughter had been sexually abused for the past seven to eight months.
One of two accused in the rape case filed on Sunday night is the girl's sister's husband, Parvez, 32, a resident of Dakshin Bindabanpara of Bogra town. The other is Hazrat Ali, 60, a neighbour.
According to the case statement, the 17-year-old girl has difficulty speaking and moving around. She stays at her home when other members of her family go to work at a tobacco factory nearby. The accused seized this opportunity to abuse the girl.
Speaking to The Daily Star last night, the mother said the girl began vomiting around two months ago. After seeing her health deteriorate over the past weeks, the family took her to a private clinic on June 23. An ultrasound was conducted, which showed that she was pregnant.
“When I asked my daughter who did this to her, she said Hazrat and Parvez had raped her several times,” said the girl's mother.
OC Kamruzzaman Mia of the police station said they have not yet been able to arrest any of the accused.
