Farmer kills himself after threat from loan shark
An elderly farmer committed suicide in Hailachia village of Nali union under Ghior upazila after the money lender he borrowed money from threatened him and demanded an astronomical figure from him in compounded interest.
Police recovered the body of Bachchu Kazi, 70, hanging from a tree in a secluded place around 400 yards from his house, around 11:30am yesterday.
Victim Bachchu Kazi's wife Shanti Begum alleged he committed suicide in face of threats from the man they took the loan from -- Alamgir Hossain of nearby Bathaimuri village.
Shanti Begum said that her husband borrowed Tk six thousand from Alamgir last year agreeing to pay an interest of Tk 10 per thousand per month. So far he has paid back Tk 6000.
On Wednesday afternoon Alamgir Hossain came to Bachchu's home and demanded Tk 30,000 in total claiming that was amount accrued under the loan agreement. He threatened to kidnap Bachu if the man failed to pay the full amount on Friday. He also threatened to kidnap Bachu's sons and hold them till Bachu paid up.
Family members and locals said Bachchu Kazi was well known and respected by everyone in the area.
On Wednesday evening his family members got concerned after he did not return home till 10:00pm. Locals then searched for him but couldn't find him. The next morning villagers found his body hanging from a tree.
Alamgir and his brother Jahangir run a small business of flexi loading. They run a shop called Bhai Bhai Telecom at Bathaimuri market. Abdul Kader Alamgir, the local chairman, said the two brothers also run a business lending money on high interest rates which they inherited from their father Qudrat Sarker.
This correspondent found Alamgir's shop closed yesterday. His whole family, including his elderly parents, were found to be away from home. They could not be contacted as both brothers' mobile phones were found switched off.
of Ghior Police Station Rabiul Islam said the body was recovered and sent to Manikganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police is investigating the matter, the OC said.
