Driving Against Traffic: JnU students scuffle with policeman
A group of Jagannath University (JnU) students yesterday engaged in a scuffle with a traffic sergeant after he stopped two buses carrying them from driving on the wrong side at Banglamotor intersection in the capital.
The incident took place at around 5:15pm while two double-decker busses of JnU tried to move towards Sonargaon Hotel intersection form Banglamotor, police said.
“The on-duty traffic sergeant, Kaisar Hamid stopped the busses. The students then engaged in an altercation with the sergeant. Later, it turned into a scuffle,” said Mehedi Hasan, additional deputy commissioner (traffic south) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
No complaint was made to any nearby police station in connection with the incident, he said, adding that buses with JnU students had driven on the wrong side before.
Contacted, JnU Vice-Chancellor Prof Mijanur Rahman said he learnt about the incident from a newspaper's website and got a photo.
“It is a reprehensible and unexpected incident. I will hand over the photo to the university proctor tomorrow [today] to identify the students and take action so that such incident does not take place in future.”
