Bernicat lauds police, others for 'amazing cooperation'
US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat yesterday appreciated the “amazing” and “continued cooperation” by the police and other authorities here for foreigners' safety.
She, however, said security is something that no one can ever feel “completely satisfied” about.
“We keep working together,” said the US diplomat while talking to reporters at the foreign ministry after her meeting with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque separately.
Bernicat also referred to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan who has made a “very important” announcement over protecting communities ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations. "It's a constant effort, and we'll keep working together."
Responding to a question, the US envoy said they will have a number of “interesting and important” visits by US officials in the New Year.
She, however, did not disclose the dates of the upcoming visits, mentioning that they want to make sure that the visits are under the “best possible conditions”.
On Rohingya issue, Bernicat said the US has “steadily” talked to Myanmar authorities on the issue and they will continue to do so.
“Everyone I met yesterday [Tuesday] in Cox's Bazar, I made that point…Rohingyas should be able to go home with safety to carry out their livelihoods,” she said, appreciating Bangladesh's efforts.
On New Year's agenda, Bernicat said the Sustainability Compact (RMG sector reforms) review will be held in January.
The European Union together with the authorities of Bangladesh, the United States and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), launched the Sustainability Compact after the Rana Plaza tragedy.
The US envoy also said they discussed various issues, including the areas in which both the countries are making progress, and cooperation on countering terrorism and extremism.
During her meeting with State Minister Shahriar, Bernicat expressed her satisfaction over the security measures taken by the government in the diplomatic zone in Dhaka as well as in other parts of the country.
She informed Shahriar of various forthcoming visits of US high officials and leaders to Dhaka next year.
Bernicat also mentioned the US offer for training of police personnel who are expected to be engaged in the proposed counter terrorism unit of Bangladesh Police.
Shahriar also discussed the possibility of resuming the Dhaka-New York direct flight with Bernicat.
