AL Infighting: One hacked to death in Jhenidah
A group of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League men hacked a local Swechchhasebok League leader to death and injured four others at Dulalmundia bazar in Kaliganj upazila Thursday night over establishing supremacy in the area.
The dead, Ohiduzzaman Ohid of Khamarmundia village in the upazila, was the cultural affairs secretary of the upazila Swechchhasebok League, a pro-AL organisation. The 35-year-old was also a bodyguard of Raigram Union Parishad Chairman Ali Hossain Apu.
Witnesses said Ali, Ohid and some AL activists were chatting about some topics at the UP chairman's office at the bazar around 10:30pm.
All of a sudden, the attackers, armed with machetes, axes and other sharp weapons, pounced on the chairman's men, leaving five people injured.
Of them, Ohid died of his injuries on way to Jessore Sadar Hospital around 11:00pm.
Two other injured, Jalal Hossain and Dildar Hossain, were admitted to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex while Billal Hossain took first aid there.
Ismail Hossain, a member of the union parishad, was admitted to Jessore Sadar Hospital.
However, UP Chairman Ali, also the general secretary of upazila Swechchhasebok League, managed to escape unhurt.
The chairman suspected that the attack was motivated from a previous enmity with his rival group which wanted to establish supremacy in the area.
The rivals were further enraged when a goat of Ohid entered the paddy field of Hazrat Ali and Sumon Hossain, two of the alleged attackers, Thursday morning and ate some plants, he added.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam said they picked up two people from the upazila yesterday in connection with the incident.
