2 killed in landslide

Two workers were killed and another was injured in a landslide while cutting a hill in Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong yesterday.

The deceased are Mir Kamal, 32, son of Nurul Islam, and Mohammed Liakat Ali, 27, son of Abdur Rahman of South Charati village in Satkania upazila. The injured is Md Halim, 20, of Satkania, said police.

Quoting witnesses, police said around eight to 10 workers were cutting a privately-owned hill at Dakkhin Para in Pukuria union around 2:00am when a chunk of earth fell on the three workers, leaving the duo dead on the spot and another injured.

Injured Halim was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Banskhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Swapan Kumar Majumder said the hill was owned by one Abul Goni and his cousin Abdur Sobur in the area.

They were cutting the hill without permission from the department of environment, police said, adding that the owners of the hill went into hiding following the incident.
