AWESOME SUPER-GROUPS

Once in a while, famous musicians from different bands come together to collaborate and create music, either for the fans or simply for a good time. Every now and then ventures, usually with too much epicness under one name, spawn something iconic and are fondly remembered for having been there. There have been plenty of All Star bands since Cream took the world of rock and roll by storm fifty years ago. Here are some of those.
PROBOT
This is the product of ex- Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighter frontman's long admiration for heavy metal. He wrote songs and recorded them with some of his favourite vocalists and signature metal styles in mind and some of them (Lemmy from Motorhead, Mac Cavalera from Sepultura) would soon collaborate with him on the 2004 release. (Some hits: “Centuries of Sin”, “Emerald Law”.)

MR BIG
Mr Big is an 80s' rock super-group founded by American bassist Billy Sheehan (who worked with the likes of Steve Vai, David Lee Roth), and features legendary Racer X guitarist Paul Gilbert who is looked up to by guitar players across the world. The band also features Eric Martin on vocals. (Some hits: “Green Tinted Sixties Mind”, “To Be With You”.)
LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT
A super-group featuring Dream Theater members Mike Portnoy (drums), John Petrucci (guitars), Jordan Rudess (keyboards) along with legendary bassist Tony Levin from King Crimson. The super-group took the progressive metal world by storm with extravagant, indulgent instrumentals. (Hits: “Acid Rain”, “Universal Mind”.)
VELVET REVOLVER
This iconic super-group includes former Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum along with Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner and Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland. They made quite the name in the genre and are seen as a crude combination of Guns N' Roses and Stone Temple Pilots. (Some hits: “Slither”, “She Builds Quick Machines”.)
THEM CROOKED VULTURES
This heavy blues rock band features the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones on bass and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme (with guitarist Alain Johannes included in the touring band). (Some hits: “New Fang”, “Nobody loves Me and Neither Do I”.)
CHICKENFOOT
This super-group features Guitar maestro Joe Satriani alongside the groovy Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) on drums and Sammy Hangar (ex- Van Halen) vocals. The band's logo is a piece sign which looks like a chicken's foot and arguably, hence the name. (Some hits: “Three And A Half Letters”, “Learning To Fall”, “Soap On A Rope”.)
HEAVEN AND HELL
Heaven And Hell was a collaboration between then and former members of Legendary heavy metal outfit Black Sabbath, Tonny Iommi and Geezer Butler, along with former members, Ronny James Dio and Vinny Appice. This band was named for Iommi to differentiate the project from the Ozzy Ozbourne-led Black Sabbath and the group disbanded due to Ronny James Dio's death from stomach cancer in 2010. They released one album, “The Devil you Know”, which still holds a great deal of emotional value to fans of Ronny James Dio as one of his last efforts. (Some hits: “Bible Black”. “Rock And Roll Angel”, “Fear”.)
THE ARISTOCRATS
Among the highly touted names among jazz and progressive rock/metal enthusiasts, The Aristocrats is a trio of the virtuoso 'Saviour Of Shred' Guthrie Govan, bassist Bryan Beller (known for his work alongside the likes of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Deathklok, the animated band from the TV Show “Metalapocalypse”) and drummer Marko Minneman who is best known for his time in Necrophagist and also frequent appearances on drummer magazines, being heavily rated for his technically sound, cutting edge and innovative approach to music. (Hits: “Furtive Jack”, “Bad Asteroid”, “Culture Clash”.)
