“It's time for theatre and media to offer something new”

For close to two decades, Monirul Islam Rubel has been associated with theatre. Although he began with acting, he is now a regular writer for theatre and television.

From an early age he has been a bookworm. Be it novels, poems or stories, he had an appetite for all kinds of writing. In 2002, he began working with Prachyanat. Initially, he wrote songs, plays and stories for Shishuder Jonyo Prachyanat. He directed Lalsalu, the final production of the 15th batch of Prachyanat acting school. The production was based on the novel by the same name by eminent writer Syed Waliullah. He also directed theatre productions Himmat Bay and Ingit. Currently, he is working as a script editor in Duranta Television.

 "Due to the wide range of mediums, I want to see variation in the productions as well," says Monirul. He believes since theatre is a combination of all arts, it can build a strong base for any media personnel. He also believes that there is no alternative to reading. About directing emerging actors, he says, "We try our best to provide the resources. They are also lucky to have the technology in their hands. However I feel that the youngsters don't feel the need for reading." He openly admits that it is not expected that everyone would be keen on reading but there is a minimum requirement which must be met. 

Agreeing with many of his colleagues he says, "Many of our neighbouring countries provide state-based subsidy to theatre workers which is absent in our country but other countries face similar crisis as we do. It's time for theatre and media to offer something new otherwise the patrons will not have any reason to pay."

For the telefilm Protidin Shonibar,  Monirul Islam Rubel received Meril Prothom Alo Awards for the Best Playwright in 2014.  He also wrote for short TV series Epilogue and Kach Brishti for Projonmo Talkies in 2017. He also writes scripts for documentaries, online promotions and advertisements.
