Fame festival ends on a high note

Reverberating with the footsteps of theatre enthusiasts, the five-day theatre festival organised by theatre troupe Fame concluded at Chittagong District Shilpakala Academy premises on Sunday night.

To mark its 16th founding anniversary, Fame organised the festival featuring screening of classical films related to theatre, a performance of Kathak dance and staging of plays by the troupe and students of Dramatics Department of Chittagong University. Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong supported the event.

On the first day of the festival, the troupe staged the play "George Dandin", based on famous France playwright Moliere's eponymous work.

A four-hour long Greek trilogywas the main attraction of the festival, which was held on the open stage of the academy premises. The trilogy, a combination of three classic tragedies – "Oedipus", "Oedipus at Colonus" and "Antigone" -- penned by Greek playwright Sophocles, drew hundreds of people on the second day.

Adapted from eminent German writer Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis", the play "Omriter Sondhane" was staged on the third day of the festival. An expressionist form was used in both music and lighting which depicted the ruthless story of a diligent youth who turns into a large insect.

Fame's chief Ashim Das, a teacher of Dramatics Department of Chittagong University, directed the plays. Ashim also designed the lights, sets, costumes and music of the plays. Mubidur Rahman Sujat, Jishu Das, Saifur Rahman Parvez, Poly Chowdhury, Monisha Orchi, Taposh Chakraborty and Hasibul Alam played important roles in the plays.

The 4th and 5th days of the festival featured a Kathak dance by artiste Tilottoma Sengupta and the drama "Nowkar Shaitan Malik Hoyran" respectively.

The festival concluded by paying tribute to the language martyrs of the country and rendering the national anthem.
