Remembering Humayun Ahmed
Six years ago today, we lost Humayun Ahmed, one of the best known authors of Bangladesh. Humayun Ahmed also made a name for himself in the world of direction with a multitude of television ventures and films. The man behind beloved characters like Himu and Misir Ali, Humayun Ahmed truly won the hearts of millions with the power of his words. In the span of his career, the legendary writer-director worked with many prominent artistes of the industry, some of whom share their memories of him with The Daily Star.
Popular actor Zahid Hasan says that plenty of people knew Humayun Ahmed as an exemplary writer and director, and rightly so. He has worked with the writer-director in many projects like the massively successful sitcom Aaj Robibar, the film Srabon Megher Din and the tele-fiction Shobuj Chata. “People still talk to me about Anis, my character in Aaj Robibar, who used the expression 'Titli Bhaiya'. Humayun Ahmed is one of the many people who played an integral role in my career,” says Zahid Hasan.
Riaz worked with Humayun Ahmed in Dui Duari and Shyamol Chhaya. He was also part of many of the writer-director's tele-fictions and telenovelas. The actor fondly describes him as a big-hearted human being. “Many of the characters that I am popular for were written by Humayun Ahmed. He was an immensely sincere artiste, but also fun to be around when he was not at work. I couldn't muster up the courage to go and visit him in his last days. I have spent some of the greatest days of my life with him, especially in Nuhash Polli,” recalls Riaz.
Alongside starring in Humayun Ahmed's films Srabon Megher Din and Dui Duari, actor Mahfuz Ahmed worked with him in a television commercial and many television ventures. “He was an instructor at the University of Dhaka when I was a student there. I was always an admirer of him,” says Mahfuz, adding that he shared a special bond with Humayun Ahmed and misses him greatly.
In addition, actor Ferdous, who worked with Humayun Ahmed in the tele-fiction Esho and the films Chandra Kotha and Amar Ache Jol, says that he has fond memories of shooting in Sylhet with the writer-director. “I remember Humayun Ahmed narrated a script for a tele-fiction to me once, but I turned it down. He then decided to not finish the script because of that,” states Ferdous.
