Whitney Houston's biopic in the making
Whitney Houston mesmerised audiences with her performances for over two decades. The singer was cited as the most awarded female artiste of all time by the Guinness World Records and remains one of the best-selling musicians of all time even today.
Houston won six Grammy Awards, 16 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards and two Emmy Awards, among many others, before her tragic death in 2012. She was inducted earlier this year into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
A feature film on the life of Houston is in the making. The Whitney Houston Estate, Primary Wave and Grammy-winning music producer Clive Davis have teamed up for the film, titled, I Wanna Dance with Somebody. The project will also be produced by Pat Houston, the singer's manager and sister-in-law, who will act on behalf of the estate.
The film, which will track her life from her musical beginnings through her tragic death, will be a "joyous, emotional and heart-breaking celebration of the life and music of the greatest female R&B pop vocalist of all time," according to reports.
The film will be scripted by Anthony McCarten, who will also act as producer. McCarten has received Oscar nominations for his screenplays for the fact-based dramas The Two Popes and The Theory of Everything. His writing credits also include Bohemian Rhapsody and Darkest Hour. McCarten's incredible biopic track record helped him win the support of the Houston family, after Houston's mentor Davis reached out to him last April.
According to reports, Stella Meghie is in talks to direct the film, but nothing has been finalised as of now. The project does not have a studio or distribution partner yet.
