Stars contesting West Bengal assembly polls: How have they fared?
In the West Bengal assembly polls, the three major political forces nominated stars from the film industry as party candidates. Even before the All India Trinamool Congress came to power in 2011, it was able to attract stars from the entertainment industry as their party representatives. However, with time, the All India Trinamool Congress failed to keep up with the trend. Subsequently, many stars became detached from the activities.
BJP's Locket Chatterjee was the candidate from Hooghly's Chunchura in this year's elections. In the last phase of the count, he was far behind his nearest rival Trinamool candidate. It is worth mentioning that Chatterjee once hailed from Mamata Banerjee's circle and he later joined the BJP.
BJP candidate singer Babul Supriya won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Asansol. He was a candidate from Taliganj in this year's polls. As of now, Supriya is behind the Trinamool candidate Arup Biswas, in terms of votes.
Actor Rudranil Ghosh was in the Trinamool Congress a few days ago. Nevertheless, after changing his party and taking up BJP's ticket, he was also lobbying behind in the elections.
On the other hand, Trinamool candidate actor-playwright Bratya Basu continued his winning streak. Hiran Chattopadhyay, who chose BJP over Trinamool this time won in Kharagpur constituency, a seat BJP state president Dilip Ghosh had won back in 2016. However, Trinamool snatched the seat in the by-election, after he won the Lok Sabha elections. This year, BJP's return to this seat is an accomplishment.
Director Raj Chakraborty is leading as a Trinamool candidate in Barakpur in North 24 Parganas. Singer Aditi Munshi is contesting as a Trinamool candidate in the Rajarhat Gopalpur constituency, and she is also ahead with her vote counts. United Front CPI (M) candidate actor Devdoot Ghosh is lagging behind in Tollygunge. On the other hand, BJP candidate actor Yash Banerjee from Chanditala in Hooghly, and Sravanti Majumder, have fallen behind in this run.
Trinamool candidate actor Chiranjit has won from Barasat in North 24 Parganas. Trinamool candidate actor Soham Chakraborty is leading in the Chandipur constituency. Trinamool candidate actor Jun Mallya is leading in the West Midnapore constituency. Trinamool's Saini Ghosh and Kanchan Mallick are also in the lead in their respective constituencies.
