Soumitra Chatterjee’s condition worsens, doctors planning on plasma therapy
The condition of actor Soumitra Chatterjee worsened today to "very critical," doctors attending on him at Kolkata's Belle Vue said.
"There is a deterioration in his neurological condition and he has very little consciousness. He is not responding to treatment. His condition is very critical," a senior doctor at the hospital said.
The platelet count in 85-year-old actor's blood has dropped further in the last 24 hours, he said.
Hospital sources said doctors are planning to subject Chatterjee to plasma therapy in order to boost his platelet count in the blood.
Asked whether the thespian has gone into a coma, the doctor his current condition was being evaluated.
It was learnt that the level of urea and sodium in Chatterjee's blood has increased and his Covid-19-inducted encephalopathy has also deteriorated, according to the doctor.
Encephalopathy is a general term to describe a disease that affects the function or structure of the brain.
The actor's organs like lungs and heart are "working well and his blood pressure is normal but his consciousness is a cause of concern."
Chatterjee was admitted to the hospital on October 6 after he tested positive for COVID-19. He had tested negative for the infection last week.
