Poppy’s initiatives to help people in need
Celebrated actor Poppy has been entertaining audiences with her versatile roles in films for decades. Currently, she is residing in her hometown, Khulna. The National Film Award-winning actor has aided nearly 2,000 destitute families with rice, lentils, face masks, hand sanitisers and other necessary goods so far. She talks about coping with the coronavirus crisis and more in a recent chat with The Daily Star.
You are one of the several celebrities who are individually helping vulnerable communities during this crisis. What is your take on that?
I would not call this a way of helping. Rather, it is my gift to those who are most affected by the pandemic. I feel honoured to be supporting vulnerable communities at this time.
Where did you choose to distribute the food and other necessary goods?
My team and I distributed in several areas at and around Khalishpur, Hasnabad, BL College, Shibbari and Ibrahim Mia Road, among other places. In Boikali, we distributed the packages, maintaining social distancing rules. I personally supervised the distribution process.
Why did you choose to start the distribution in Khulna?
I came to my hometown, Khulna, with my family one month ago. Owing to the nationwide shutdown, we couldn't go back to Dhaka. As I am spending time at home, I realised I should do something for the vulnerable families here.
When are you planning to come back to Dhaka?
That is very uncertain as of now. I hope everything goes back to normal soon. I hope to come back once this shutdown is lifted by the government. Till then, I urge everyone to stay home and stay healthy.
