No celebrations for National Film Day today
In 2012, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced April 3 as the National Film Day. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, then Industry and Commerce Minister, raised the bill of Purbo Pakistan Cholochitro Unnoyon Shongstha on this day in 1957.
Every year since 2012, this day is celebrated with festivities. The Ministry of Information, in association with Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) and National Film Day Celebration Committee, celebrated the National Film Day last year. Nayak Raj Razzak was the Chief of the National Film Day Celebration Committee for several year. For the first time since its announcement, this year, the celebrations have been cancelled.
"We took the difficult decision of not celebrating National Film Day, owing to concerns over the rapidly spreading coronavirus," explains Mushfiqur Rahman Gulzar, President, Bangladesh Film Directors' Association.
"We have only one duty now, and that is to stay home during these troubling times," shares Syed Hasan Imam, Convener, National Film Day Celebration Committee.
National Film Award-winning actor Anjana shared that she loved seeing film actors and crew members gather together at BFDC to celebrate this day, as a family.
"Each year, it is a matter of immense happiness for us to have a special day dedicated to films. It is unfortunate that the film fraternity will not be celebrating the occasion," adds actor Rozina.
