Jennifer Hudson shines as Aretha Franklin in ‘Respect’ teaser
The first look of Jennifer Hudson as the Queen of Soul in the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect, is out. A teaser premiered recently, featuring Hudson as Franklin belting out the classic cover of Otis Redding’s song, Respect. The 40-second clip begins with Hudson, wearing a sparkly golden dress, standing on a dark stage, backlit by golden lights. As Hudson comes to the end of the song’s first verse, the word, ‘respect’, spelled out in giant illuminated letters, appears behind her. The Oscar-winning actor then belts out the chorus as each letter in the word ‘respect,’ lights up as she sings it.
The film, scheduled to hit theatres in 2020, will follow Franklin’s rise to superstardom, from singing gospel in her father’s church to her emergence as one of the most powerful and influential voices in soul and R&B. The cast of Respect also includes Forest Whitaker, Mary J Blige, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess and Tate Donovan.
