Hollywood stars donating to combat coronavirus pandemic

Celebrities are uniting to donate to different causes, as the world copes with the coronavirus pandemic.

Actor and humanitarian Angelina Jolie has donated $1 million to fight child hunger, during the outbreak of COVID-19. She has donated to No Kid Hungry, which will provide meals for children from low-income families across the US, while schools are closed.

Rihanna's Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) has donated $5 million to organisations in the US and around the world. The money will go towards producing protective equipment for frontline health workers, researching to develop a vaccine against the virus and accelerating testing and care in countries such as Haiti and Malawi. CLF has also donated to food banks in the US.

American songwriter Jay Z's Shawn Carter Foundation donated $1 million to support undocumented workers, homeless and elderly populations and children of frontline healthcare workers.

Taylor Swift appears to have turned a life saviour for fans affected by the pandemic, sending donations to those who are going through a challenging time. Many of her fans posted online to say that they have received financial help and private messages from Swift, after sharing their struggles on social media. Lady Gaga's beauty brand HAUS is donating a percentage of their profits to support food banks.

The former California governor and Hollywood actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has pledged $1 million towards the coronavirus relief effort.

Oscar-winner, Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband Brad Falchuk have donated $100,000 to help healthcare workers, while James McAvoy has donated £275,000 to the Masks For NHS Heroes campaign to provide protective equipment for staff.

The Modern Family star, Eric Stonestreet donated 200,000 meals to Harvesters Food Bank in Kansas and Justin Timberlake donated to the Mid-South Food Bank, which is in his hometown of Memphis.

Moreover, Shawn Mendes donated to Canada's SickKids Foundation to help support urgent screening and preventing coronavirus from spreading, while Rita Ora partnered with the United Nations to design merch to benefit the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund powered by UN Foundation and the Swiss Philanthropy Foundation.

Bruno Mars is donating $1 million to the MGM Resorts Foundation to support MGM employees impacted economically by the pandemic.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have also donated $400,000 to hospitals in New York City as the city grapples with the coronavirus pandemic. Previously, the couple have donated $1m to help provide food for the elderly and low-income families.
