Breaking the Silence — a short film grant competition for female storytellers
'Breaking the Silence' is a short film grant competition for female storytellers, aged between 15 and 30. It is presented by the organisation, Sultana's Dream.
Begum Rokeya, a pioneer of women's education in South Asia, wrote "Sultana's Dream" in 1902. It is a story set in a world where women operate in the public space, and in order to maintain purdah, men have gone into the zenanas (inner quarters). In this world, women can take up public space without fear or guilt.
As an organisation, Sultana's Dream believes that with the number of violence against women cases escalating all over Bangladesh, it is even more important for women to put forward their own narratives, take up public imagination with their stories and proclaim their individualities.
The organisation is inviting women to submit their proposals for short films of five to eight minutes, belonging to any genre or style, for the competition. Genres such as fiction, documentary, visual essay, animation and experimental are all welcome. Topics of the films should relate to women's experiences of sexual abuse and survival.
They will provide mentorship, logistics and financial support for the selected projects.
Interested individuals will need to mail Sultana's Dream the Director's Note (1000 words), Synopsis (1000 words), One Line Budget and Visual Reference by January 31, 2021, for submitting their project.
