Best of Emmy Awards 2019
The 71st Emmy Awards was held at Los Angeles recently. Much like the Oscars for films and the Grammy Awards for music, the Emmys are the most prestigious awards for Hollywood’s television industry.
Medieval drama Game of Thrones closed its run with a fourth Emmy award for best drama series while British comedy Fleabag was the upset winner for best comedy series, on a night that rewarded newcomers over old favourites. Billy Porter, the star of Pose, won the Emmy for best dramatic actor, while British newcomer Jodie Comer took the Emmy for her lead actress role as a psychotic assassin in the quirky BBC America drama Killing Eve. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the star and creator of Amazon Studios’ Fleabag, took the trophy for best comedy actress. She also won an Emmy for comedy writing.
Already the most-awarded series in Emmy history with 38 wins, HBO’s Game of Thrones went into the show as the clear front runner, despite a fan uproar over the conclusion of the series. It emerged from the Emmys with a leading 12 wins, with Soviet nuclear accident drama Chernobyl taking 10 awards and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel winning eight Emmys, including for supporting actors Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein.
Peter Dinklage was the only one of the nine nominated Game of Thrones actors to win, for his supporting role as Tyrion Lannister.
Newcomer Jharrel Jerome was named best actor for When They See Us, the Netflix dramatisation of the men known as the Central Park Five, who were wrongly accused and imprisoned for rape in 1980s New York.
Other first-time Emmy winners included Julia Garner for the drug trafficking thriller Ozark, British actor Ben Whishaw for A Very English Scandal, and Jesse Armstrong, the creator of the media conglomerate family drama, Succession.
