Arati Das passes away
Veteran artiste Arati Das, Kolkata’s first cabaret queen who became popular as ‘Miss Shefali’ in the 1960s and 70s, passed away due to a cardiac arrest at her residence in Sodepur in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
Born in Bangladesh, Arati Das, who migrated to Kolkata at the time of the partition, was suffering from kidney ailments for quite some time.
Having made her film debut with Chowringhee, starring Uttam Kumar and Supriya Choudhury, among others, she also appeared in maestro Satyajit Ray’s Pratidwandi and Seembaddha and Mrinal Sen’s Parasuram. Besides, she acted in several stage plays, including Samrat o Sundari, Saheb Bibi Golam and Ashlil.
