Serenading Pahela Baishakh
Several cultural organisations and educational institutions organised colourful functions to celebrate Pahela Baishakh in Mymensingh, the first day of the Bangla New Year 1425.
A daylong cultural programme was held on the campus of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU).
The day's programme included a flamboyant procession Mangal Shobhajatra organised by the students of Fine Arts Department of the university. The teachers, students and employees of the university took part in the procession, holding hundreds of images of different traditional items like birds and animals.
The Fine Arts Department students also organised a phanush (sky lantern) festival, lighting lamps and fireworks on the campus marking Chaitra Sangkranti, the last day of the Bangla Year 1424. They also staged seven palas based on the 'Ramayana' and 'Mahabharata' which are very popular with the people of South Khulna.
Students and teachers of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Fine Arts Institute brought out Mangal Shobhajatra in Mymensingh town to welcome the New Year.
Artistes of Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilan Parishad organised a cultural show marking the occasion at the town's Zainul Park Baishakhi Mancha, on the bank of Old Brahmaputra River.
Mymensingh Borshoboron Udjapon Parshad in Mymensingh organised a rally in the town.
Different educational institutions including Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and Mymensingh Medical College organised daylong programmes on their campuses.
Marking the celebrations, fairs were also held in different areas of the district including Mymensingh town.

Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year, was celebrated in Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University in Tangail with festivity.
The colourful Mangal Shobhajatra led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Alauddin began in front of the administrative building in the morning and ended at the muktamancha after winding its way through the campus.
University authorities organised various programmes including Baishakhi fair, different traditional sports events like cock fight, kanamachhi, haribhanga, roshi tana tani, chacha apon pran bancha, kabadi, pillow passing, dances, songs and plays on the campus. Students, teachers and officials of the institutions took part in the programmes.
A special menu was prepared at the university on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh. This was followed by a cultural function at the muktamacha with the participation of students who performed traditional Bangla songs and dances.
Dean of Engineering Faculty Dr Muhammad Shahin Miah, president of the Teachers' Association of the University, and Dean of Life Science Faculty Professor ASM Saufllah, convenor of the Pahela Baishakh Celebration Committee, moderated and coordinated the events.
