Brazilian Week underway at Dhaka Regency
The Federative Republic of Brazil is holding a festive “Brazilian Week” at the capital's Dhaka Regency Hotel and Resorts, giving Dhaka residents a taste of authentic food and music from the Latin American nation. The festival was inaugurated this past Friday through a gala dinner with dignitaries in attendance.
Shahid Hamid FIH, the executive director of Dhaka Regency, spoke at the event, saying “Bangladeshi people associate Brazil chiefly with football, but there is so much more to their culture,” adding that he was excited to present Brazil through its cuisine and music to the people of Bangladesh.
João Tabajara de Oliveira Júnior, the Brazilian Ambassador to Bangladesh, in his speech, said, “My mission here is to show more of Brazil to Bangladesh, and also for Brazil to know more about Bangladesh.”
The evening featured a lovely performance from Indiana Nomma, a rising Latin jazz and Bossa Nova singer, and her troupe – who were flown in from Brazil for the occasion. Their set opened with an instrumental jazz jam before the singer took stage, and entertained the audience to the pulsating Latin rhythms and grooves coupled with her deep voice and energetic performance. At one point, Nomma also invited the wife of the Brazilian Ambassador to join her in singing one of the most familiar songs from the country – “Garota de Ipanema” (that was made famous worldwide by Frank Sinatra's English version, “The Girl from Ipanema”).
Two celebrity chefs - also flown in for the festival – Ronny Peterson and Marcos Vieira were also in attendance at the event, and cooked a delectable three-course authentic Brazilian dinner for the guests.
The festival continues from April 21-26 at the Dhaka Regency, where guests can enjoy the music of Indiana Nomma and taste the Brazilian delicacies.
