Ansar man killed by stray bullet
An Ansar member was hit by a bullet and killed in the capital's Moghbazar in the early hours of yesterday as unidentified criminals fired shots into the air.
Exact reasons behind the firing could not be known but it is suspected that the firing was intended to create panic in the neighbourhoods.
The incident occurred around 12:45am. Abdul Alim, 28, was on guard with two of his fellow Ansar men in front of the T&T Colony gate, said Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station. Four men wearing helmets went there on two rickshaws and fired some seven to eight shots. As Alim rushed towards them, one bullet hit him in the chest.
Another Ansar member, Mostafizur Rahman, who had been in front of the Ansar guard room at that time, said he and his colleague Harun had rushed to the place, hearing the gunshots and saw the armed men fleeing on the rickshaws. There were three to four more people with firearms, who ran away.
Mostafizur said he had a gun with him but had been so stunned by the suddenness of the incident that the criminals hurried away before he could fire back.
Besides, he said, “When we saw Alim lying on the ground our primary response was to try to save him.”
"While leaving, they [armed men] hurled abuse calling out someone named Ahad.”
Alim was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead around 1:15am.
A man named Abdul Ahad and his brother, Abdul Qayum, have been detained in connection with the incident, the OC said.
Ahad is involved in a business of voice over internet protocol in partnership with Romiz who lives in the same colony. Romiz on Wednesday night threatened Ahad's brother Mohamamad Sumon when the latter went to him to demand Tk 1 crore that Romiz owed him.
Romiz has been on the run since the incident.
The miscreants probably had no enmity with Alim, said Shiblee Noman, assistant commissioner of police (Ramna Zone).
"We think that a gang of criminals working for Romiz did the firing," OC Mashiur said.
