AL to recall the slain of Aug 21 today
Just as the clock strikes 5:22pm today, Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina will place a wreath and observe two minutes' silence at a temporary memorial on Bangabandhu Avenue marking the 10th anniversary of the August 21 grenade attack.
The time signifies the precise moment when the first of the 13 grenades exploded at an AL rally there in 2004. Hasina narrowly escaped death but 24 party leaders and activists, including late president Zillur Rahman's wife Ivy Rahman, were killed and over 300 people injured.
Hasina will also meet the survivors and families of those who died and participate in a discussion, initiating countrywide programmes by associate bodies.
In a statement yesterday, President Abdul Hamid said the attack was aimed at assassinating Hasina.
“Mutual respect and tolerance are a must to make the country's democracy meaningful. My firm belief is that all political parties will contribute from their own positions to expedite the progress of democracy.”
Hasina, in her statement, said the attack's main aim was to instil corruption, terrorism, militancy, conspiracy and misrule in the country by destroying the progress of democracy, independence, peace and development.
She hoped that the rule of law would be established through trial of the attackers and their patrons.
