AL leader frees 'criminal' with undertaking
Badda police yesterday released an alleged local criminal upon an undertaking from an Awami League (AL) leader after being besieged by activists of the ruling party and its associate organisations who are also known as local miscreants.
Police had detained Ramzan with two bottles of Phensedyl and a motorcycle from the capital's Badda DIT Project area around 3:30am yesterday, said the local residents.
Ramzan was a member of a notorious local gang, “Joynal Group”, involved in land grabbing, mugging, extortion and murders, they said, adding that the activists, whom they termed as local miscreants, had besieged Badda Police Station in the afternoon demanding Ramzan's release.
However, Officer-in-Charge Abdul Jalil claimed that the motorcycle, with a packet on it containing the illegal drugs, was found abandoned in the area.
Police had detained Ramzan when he came to the station and claimed the motorcycle and “some slum dwellers and Ramzan's associates” had besieged the station, he said.
Awami League's Badda unit President SM Talal Rizvi had given the undertaking, he added. The station declined to provide The Daily Star with Talal's contact numbers.
