ACC summons 2 former ministers
The Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday summoned former health and family welfare minister AFM Ruhal Haque and former state minister for water resources Mahbubur Rahman Talukder to quiz them about allegations of amassing wealth illegally.
Ruhal Haque has been asked to be present at the ACC headquarters on February 24 and Mahbubur on 23.
The anti-graft body served notices on the duo, warning them of legal action for failure to respond to the orders, said a top ACC official.
Following newspaper reports, the commission on January 22 started preliminary investigation into the corruption allegations against some ministers, including the duo, and lawmakers of the ninth parliament.
According to Mahbubur's wealth statement submitted to the Election Commission in 2008, he had only 20 acres of agricultural land.
In the run-up to the 10th parliamentary election, Mahbubur, who got elected unopposed from Patuakhali-4, stated that he had 2,865 acres of arable land, an astounding increase of 143 times in only five years.
On the other hand, Ruhal Haque in his wealth statement in 2008 mentioned that he had properties worth Tk 4.99 crore. But his latest weath report showed that he had properties worth around Tk 9 crore.
Interestingly, his wife in 2008 had around Tk 97 lakh which increased to around Tk 7.50 crore in the last five years.
ACC sources said they already collected income tax documents of the persons summoned and issued notices to the authorities concerned for documents of land of Ruhal and Mahbubur.
