A day of football fest
Kolsindur Govt Primary School of Mymensingh had returned empty-handed from the final round, despite dominating at the divisional level, in the last two editions of the Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Gold Cup Primary School Tournament. But they never gave up hope of winning and returned more resolute this time. Their persistence reaped rewards yesterday as they clinched the title of the third edition with a facile 4-1 win over Mogachari Govt Primary School at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Head Mistress Minoti Rani Shil had a big role in the success. She formed and nurtured her team through donation from local citizens. She even managed video footages of FC Barcelona and Arsenal and showed it to her girls to give them an idea of how football is played at the top level.
The signs of improvement were evident as the Kolsindur girls showed good skill in receiving, passing and shooting which helped them to score four excellent goals in the second half against Mogachari girls', much to the delight of a few thousand school kids at the stadium.
“Having seen the boys playing in the ground, I though of forming a girls' team for Bangamata tournament and I formed even though I was warned not to take the girls to the playground,” said an elated Minoti after winning the final.
Meanwhile, in the final of the 4th Bangabandhu Gold Cup Primary School Tournament, Beradanga Katapir Jadurpur Primary School of Niphamari emerged champions after handing Uttar Korapara Govt Primary School of Barisal Division a 4-2 defeat in shootout after the regulation and extratime ended in a 1-1 draw.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina witnessed the girls' final and distributed prizes among the winners of both the tournament and promised to start Inter-District Gold Cup tournaments.
