9 army men hurt during training
At least nine army personnel were injured when two grenades went off accidentally during a training session at a cantonment in Dinajpur yesterday. This was the second military accident in a little over three months' time.
Four of the injured were flown to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in a critical state, reports our Dinajpur and Rangpur correspondents, quoting sources.
Captain Mursalin Haque, staff officer at Shaheed Mahbub Army Cantonment in Parbatipur, confirmed the incident.
The other injured were admitted to Rangpur CMH.
According to sources, a team of army personnel from 34 Bengal Regiment of Rangpur went to the cantonment for training.
During the training session on grenade throwing around 4:00pm, two grenades slipped off the hands of a soldier and exploded, leaving the nine injured, sources said.
The injured army men are warrant officers Ketabur Rahman and Mohammad Ali, Sergeant Fazlur Rahman, corporals Rawshan Ali, Mannan, and Golam Rasul, and soldiers Bikash Chandra Roy, Rahman and Zahir.
On February 12, six members of Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were killed when a mortar shell exploded inside the barrel during an exercise at Ghatail Cantonment in Tangail.
At least 10 BGB personnel, including a major, were also injured in the explosion.
