8 tonnes of govt rice seized in Sirajganj, 3 held
Police seized eight tonnes of government rice, contained in 134 sacks, which were allegedly being smuggled for the black market, in Sirajganj's Shahzadpur upazila today.
Md Shahid Mahamud, officer-in-charge of Shahzadpur Police Station, said they arrested three people -- rice trader Rabiul Islam (45), truck driver Rubel Hossain (30) and truck helper Md Alam (36) -- in this connection.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Shahzadpur Police Station launched a drive in Koujuri village this morning when the workers were loading the rice sacks into a truck from a warehouse and seized the 134 sacks (each sack carrying 60 kgs of rice), said the OC.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees claimed they were carrying the rice to be sold in a market in Natore, our Pabna correspondent reports quoting the OC.
Md Monirul Haque, Shahzadpur upazila food control officer, said the recovered rice was for the Government Food Safety programme to be sold at Tk 10 per kg 10.
"Talking with the arrestees we come to know that they collected the government rice through three other traders from Ullapara upazila. They were attempting to sell the government rice in the black market," the food control officer said.
The Shahzadpur upazila food officer filed a case accusing six people, including the three arrestees, with Shahzadpur police station this afternoon in this connection.
