8 days in jail for no crime
A man who was arrested and imprisoned for eight days for a crime he did not commit was released yesterday after the plaintiff told a local court of his mistaken identity.
A CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver, Md Jasim Uddin was freed from Chittagong Central Jail following an order by Judge Md Zakir Hossain of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2.
The court also sought an explanation at the earliest from Md Shajahan, officer-in-charge of Lohagara Police Station, on the arrest.
The police in a report handed to the court admitted the mistake claiming that the accused in a dowry case and the arrestee have the same name, said court sources.
An arrest warrant was issued for Jasim Uddin, son of Abul Kasem in Lohagara upazila, Chittagong after his wife Parvin Akhter sued him in September last year for torturing her for dowry.
The victim of the same upazila was arrested and sent to jail through the court on August 31.
Parvin in a statement submitted to the court on September 2 said the accused was seen in the locality and sought the release of the arrestee.
