70 hurt as rival villagers clash in two districts
At least 70 people were injured as rival groups of villagers clashed in Jhenidah and Sunamganj districts on Tuesday.
More than 20 people were injured in a clash between two groups in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenidah, reports our correspondent.
Of the injured, 12 were admitted to the upazila health complex while the rest to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital.
Police and locals said there was a longstanding conflict between former UP member Sakhawat Hossain and Tulu Mia of Goalbari village over establishing supremacy in the area.
As a sequel to the conflict, the rival groups attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving 20 from both sides injured on Tuesday morning.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Anwar Hossain, officer in-charge of Shailkupa police station.
In Sunamganj, at least 50 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups over a disputed land at Kumankandi village in Chhatak upazila on Tuesday, reports UNB.
Twenty of the injured were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Police said Amirul Islam of the village had long been conflict with Maksud Mia of the village over the land.
On Tuesday afternoon, supporters of both groups had an altercation that was followed by a clash, leaving the 50 from both sides injured.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
