6 to die for killing businessman

A Narayanganj court yesterday sentenced six people to death and another to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of a businessman in Siddhirganj upazila in 2009.

The lifer, Sadia Akhter, was fined Tk 50,000 while each of the six -- Swapan, Nazmul, Mamum, Aminul Islam, Sajjad Alam Dollar and Zakir Hossain -- was fined Tk 1 lakh. All the fine money will be handed over to the victim's family.

Nazmul, Mamun and Sajjad were present in the court while the rest are absconding.

Nazmul and Sadia, who were in a relationship, devised a plan to kill Rafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, who had a liking for Sadia.

Sadia called Rafiqul out of his house and the convicts tied him up and slit his throat on May 3.
