54 Jamaat-Shibir men held over attack on Ctg AL MP
Joint forces rounded up 54 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, early today for their alleged involvement in attacking an Awami League lawmaker in Lohagora upazila of Chittagong.
The Jamaat-Shibir men attacked Abu Reza Mohammad Nezamuddin Nadvi, an AL lawmaker from Chittagong 15 constituency (Satkania-Lohagara), on Friday when he was addressing Siratunnabi Mahfil, an Islamic programme, at Sirat Maidan in Chunati union of the upazila.
At least 21 people including six law enforcers were injured in the attack when Jamaat-Shibir men hurled brickbats and shoes, prompting the police to escort the lawmaker to a nearby mosque.
A team of police, Rab and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) picked up the Jamaat-Shibir men conducting nearly a seven-hour raid from 10:00pm Saturday in different areas of the upazila, said Faruk Islam, an assistant sub-inspector of Lohagora Police Station.
A case was filed on Friday accusing 150 Jamaat-Shibir activists by name and 2,500-3,000 others unnamed.
