48 women lawmakers elected unopposed

The Election Commission yesterday declared 48 women lawmakers elected unopposed from reserved seats in the 10th parliament.
Joint Secretary of EC Secretariat Jesmin Tuli, also returning officer of the election to women reserved seats-2014, made the announcement in a public circular.
“The 48 aspirants have been elected uncontested as there is no rival candidates in the seats, and none of them withdrew their nominations till 5:00pm of March 18, the deadline for withdrawal of nominations,” said EC's official circular.
The commission will publish a gazette of the newly elected women lawmakers today, said EC officials.
The election to the reserved    seats was scheduled to be held on April 3.
There are 50 seats reserved for women lawmakers. Nominations of two candidates among 50 aspirants were cancelled for defaulting on telephone bills.
They are Sabiha Nahar Begum of Awami League and Khorshed Ara Haque of Jatiya Party.
Polls date for these two seats will be announced later, said EC officials.
Of the reserved seats, the AL-led alliance gets 41, JP six and the combine of independent candidates three.
SREEPUR POLLS
Election to Sreepur upazila parishad in Gazipur will be held on March 31, said EC officials.
The election was scheduled for March 15 in the third phase upazila elections. But the EC on March 11 suspended the polls, citing the absence of congenial atmosphere for fair polls.
Three days before suspending the polls, hours-long clash between the supporters of AL-backed chairman candidate and the rebel candidate in Sreepur took place that killed one and injured at least 50 people.

Re-election to 14 centres of seven upazilas will be held on March 27. Voting to these centres was postponed as violence flared up during the third phase upazila election.
The upazilas are Haziganj of Chandpur, Kamalnagar of Laxmipur, Kuliarchar of Kishoreganj, Hizla of Barisal, Titas of Comilla and Gouripur and Muktagachha of Mymensingh.
