4 shops gutted in Elephant Road fire
At least four shops were gutted as a fire broke out at Multiplan Centre on Elephant Road in the capital last night.
The fire broke out on the eighth floor of the 14-srotey building around 9:00pm and later spread to the ninth floor, fire service sources said.
On information, 13 fire-fighting units went to the spot and doused the flames after one and a half hours' effort.
Azizul Islam, a shopkeeper on the building's first floor, told The Daily Star that the market closed around 8:30pm and the main switch of the electric supply was also turned off.
Major Mohammad Mahboob, director (operation and maintenance) of Fire Service and Civil Defence told this correspondent that the fire was transmitted through electric lines.
Two shops were gutted on the eighth floor while other two on the ninth floor, he said but couldn't confirm about the origin of the fire.
