3 to die in N'ganj, man gets life in Moulvibazar
A court here yesterday sentenced three people to death and two others to life term imprisonment for killing a four and a half-year-old boy in Fatullah area in Sadar upazila in 2011, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each.
The death row convicts are Wasim, Mohammad Sadek and Abdus Salam. The lifers are Mohammad Swapon and Lucky Akhter.
Of the convicts, Wasim, Salam and Lucky were tried in absentia.
The court also acquitted Mohammad Shakil as the charges brought against him could not be proved.
According to the case statement, the convicts, abducted Mohammad Jihad, son of Akter Hossain of Chatlarmath area, on June 26, 2014. The gang then demanded Tk 3 lakh from his parents as ransom.
Later, they killed the boy and threw his body into the Shitalakkhya River the same day.
Away in Habiganj, a court on Sunday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for killing his wife for dowry in Madhabpur upazila in April 2013, our Moulvibazar correspondent reports.
The lifer is Rinku Dev, 35, son of late Bishnu Dev of Katihara village of the upazila.
According to the prosecution, Rinku, 35, used to torture his wife Chanchala Rani Das, 20, for dowry since their marriage in 2012.
On April 7 in 2013, Rinku beat up Chanchala mercilessly over the issue and at one stage, he strangled her.
