3 'snatchers' beaten dead
Three people were beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of attempting to steal a motorcycle in Gazipur's Sreepur yesterday.
Of them, Nurul Islam, 27, son of one Abul Hossain of Sohadia village of Sreepur upazila, stood accused in a number of carjacking cases, police said.
Identities of the two others could not be known.
Mohsinul Quadir, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, told The Daily Star the three were preparing to snatch a motorcycle in Gilashwar village of the upazila around 3:00am. Sensing their attempts, locals chased them.
They managed to catch the tree in adjacent Sohadia village. The angry mob gave the three a savage beating, leaving them dead on the spot, he said.
On information from locals, police went to the scene around 6:30am.
No motorcycle, however, was recovered from the spot.
"The motorcycle owner drove away," said the OC when asked about the vehicle.
The three bodies were sent to the Gazipur Sadar Hospital for autopsies.
Deceased Nurul Islam was accused in the murder of one Jasim Uddin, 22, one and a half months ago, OC Quadir said.
However, his name was not included in the first information report (FIR).
"The other accused had told us about his involvement in Jasim's murder during interrogation. Police were looking for him," said Quadir.
Talking to The Daily Star, Nurul's mother Nurza Begum claimed her son was killed as part of a plan to avenge the killing of Jasim.
