3 confess to trafficking Bangladeshis to Libya
Three members of a gang linked to the trafficking of 26 Bangladeshis killed in Libya on May 28 today confessed to a magistrate that they had trafficked a number of people including Md Rakib who had been missing since that date.
The accused are: Zahangir Hossain (40) of Shibchar in Madaripur, Badsha Fakir (34) of Bhanga in Faridpur and Kabir Howlader (38) of Muladi in Barishal.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain recorded their statements after SM Gaffarul Alam, an inspector of the detective branch of police and also the investigation officer of the case, brought them at his chamber.
After recording their statements, the magistrate sent them to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
In his confessional statement, Kabir Howlader told the magistrate that he was an employee of M/S Ababil Tours & Travels and he submitted a passport of one Md Rakib, one of the victims, to Zahangir for sending him to Libya.
Later, Zahangir, through Badsha Fakir, another arrestee in the case, sent Rakib to Libya in June last year. But Rakib was missing since the killing of 26 Bangladeshis in Libya on May 28.
In his statement, Badsha Fakir said he had been in Libya for the last 13 years and he has his camp there at Jowra and Benghazi city.
He regularly trafficked people to Libya from all over Bangladesh and other traffickers also kept victims in his camp.
Rakib also stayed at his camp in Libya where the killing took place.
The killing took place when four of the dead -- from Madaripur -- were being held in his camp and were being trafficked to Tripoli, he said in his confessional statement.
Zahangir in his confessional statement said he hailed from Madaripur but he stayed in Dhaka and collected tourist visas and on-arrival visas by scanning passports and sending soft copies of those to UAE and Libya.
Another Dhaka court today sent Md Nasir Uddin, paternal uncle of Kabir, to jail after completion of his three-day remand in the same case.
Mohsin Howlader, another arrestee in the case, on June 7 gave a confessional statement about the involvement of the accused in trafficking people to Libya.
Mannan Munshi, father of the victim, filed a case with Paltan Police Station on June 4 against 16 traffickers -- including the four -- for their alleged involvement with trafficking of his son in June last year.
According to the prosecution, it was alleged that Badsha, Zahangir, Kabir and others were involved with the trafficking of his son Rakib to Libya in June last year.
With these four, a total of 52 people including Kamal Uddin alias Haji Kamal, the ring leader of the human trafficking gang, were arrested so far in 26 cases filed across the country over human trafficking to Libya.
