3 BAU students expelled, 3 more suspended
Three students of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have been expelled from the university while three more suspended for different terms for their alleged involvement in the killing of a student Saad Ibney Momtaj last week.
At an emergency syndicate meeting of BAU at Mymensingh campus this morning the authorities expelled Md Rezaul Karim Reza, a master’s student of finance of economics faculty, Sujoy Kumer Kundu and Md Rukonuzzaman, honours final year students of fisheries faculty.
The BAU authorities also suspended three honours students -- Nazmul Shahdat Russel, final year student of economics faculty, Dewan Md Murfad final year student of agricultural economics and rural sociology faculty for four years and Md Antor Chowdhury, a second year student of animal husbandry faculty, for two years.
All students are the activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of the ruling Awami League, reports our BAU correspondent.
The syndicate members took the decision at the emergency meeting held at the university’s Vice-Chancellor Office and chaired by VC Prof Md Rafiqul Hoque, around 10:30am, said BAU Registrar Md Abdul Khalek, member secretary of the syndicate.
Earlier, the six member probe committee, headed by Prof Mohsin Ali submitted its report to the university VC last night. An emergency meeting was held later on with the Board of Residence and Students Disciplinary Committee that recommended for the punishment of the students.
The final year student of the fisheries faculty, Saad, succumbed to his injuries at a private clinic on April 1, a day after BCL had beaten him up with hockey sticks, iron rods and cricket stumps in room No 205 of the hall.
He was a former organising secretary of Ashraful Haque Hall unit BCL.
Police however arrested Sujoy and Rukon on April 2 evening following a case filed by the university authorities with Mymensingh Sadar Police Station the same night.
Rejecting the punishment of only six students, agitating students continue with demonstration on the campus to press home their demand for legal action against all involved in the killing incident.
The protesters have put the administrative building lock and key demanding expulsion, arrest and capital punishment of all who involved in the killing.
Their demands include capital punishment of Saad killers under Speedy Trial Act, irrefutable life term expulsion of the killers from BAU, removal of Ashraful Haque Hall Provost Prof Md Rafiqul Islam and Assistant Proctor Siddiqur Rahman from the committee formed to probe Saad murder, and adequate security measured for teachers, students and staffs on the campus.
