274 charged in Cox's Bazar
Police on Thursday submitted charge sheets against 274 persons in three cases filed for creating violence in Cox's Bazar last year demanding release of Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee, who had been detained on war crimes charges.
On February 15, 2013, Jamaat-Shibir activists under the banner of “Sayedee Mukti Parishad” brought out processions in Rumaliachhara and Tarabaniachhara areas of the town after Juma prayers.
Then police foiled their attempts to set two battery-run auto-rickshaws on fire that triggered a gunfight between the law enforcers and the activists, killing three Jamaat-Shibir men and injuring 50 others, including some policemen.
In this regard, police filed four cases.
On February 28, 2013, International Crimes Tribunal-1 gave Sayedee death penalty for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War and in September this year, the Supreme Court commuted the punishment to imprisonment till death.
