Extortionist held with Tk 90,000

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested an extortionist and recovered Tk 90,000 from his possession at Tejgaon Industrial Area in the city yesterday.

The arrestee was identified as Arif, 18, who claimed himself to be an accomplice of Subrata Bain, one of the 23 top listed criminals.

Rab officials said Farid Ahmed, an engineer of Microsoft Bangladesh Limited, had been receiving calls over the past few days from unknown callers who identified themselves as accomplices of Subrata Bain and demanded Tk 2.5 lakh from him.

When Farid informed the Rab of the phone calls, Rab officials made a tactical plan to arrest the caller.

According to the plan, Farid negotiated with the callers who finally agreed to bring down the amount to Tk 90,000. They also told Farid that they would wait in front of the Nabisco Company at Tejgaon to receive the money.

Rab-1 members in plainclothes followed Farid when he took the money to the callers yesterday. As soon as Arif received the money, the Rab members caught him red-handed.

Rab officials said Arif informed them that he and his gang had been involved in collecting tolls for a long time.
