President urges universities

"Universities have a great role to play in imparting quality education so that our students can make themselves worthy citizens to face the challenges (of the new millennium)," he said while addressing the 11th convocation of the Independent University in the city.

Vice Chancellor of the university Prof Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury and Education Adviser Ayub Quadri were present on the occasion. Prof Ataul Karim attended the programme as the convocation speaker.

The president said the pace of globalisation and the ever-increasing challenges, which are absolutely competitive, can be responded only by harnessing skilled human resources.

"As you know, educational institutions, particularly the universities, are the main sources of creating human resources in our society," he told the function.

Iajuddin mentioned that the government has been making huge budgetary allocations for thTe education sector for improving the standard of education in the country.

He observed that female education, particularly in rural areas, has increased significantly for giving due importance to it.

He called upon all to explore the avenues of possibilities to translate the vision into reality. "I urge all to come forward to materialise the dreams of millions with the spirit of patriotism and utmost dedication so that we can make a self-reliant Bangladesh soon," he added.

Congratulating the graduating students on their success, he expressed his confidence that they are now fully ready to shoulder the responsibilities to be given by the nation.

"Remember, you're fortunate enough that you've been able to reach this stage with the patronage and support of the society. So, it's your turn to acknowledge these debts," he said.
