Chinese graphic art in Dhaka


Zheng Qingdian, the Chinese ambassador, speaking at the inauguration of the China Graphic Design Exhibition at Sufia Kamal Hall, National Museum, yesterday, said that the show depicts the latest art trend in China. He said that this exhibition would introduce Chinese graphic art to Bangladesh. He added that while China was growing rapidly, importance was also given to the country's cultural background.

A B M Abdul Howk Chowdhury, secretary, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, lauded Bangladesh's ties with China. He also stressed on the importance of our cultural delegations to China.

Samar Chandra Pal, director general of National Museum, praised China's prowess in the field of art that is recorded in history.

Package, one of the fascinating graphic posters, has birds, flowers and trees in gold, set on a backdrop of red. The parcel is tied with a gold silk thread. It is a liquor packaging and the designing has been done by Chen Xiaolin. The New year Gift Packaging brings in wine once more as the subject and the designer is Hao Xueting. Different angles of the bottles and the packages are presented with care and suavity.

Fish, done by He Jie brings in a huge fish dominated by black checks. It has a black body, fins and tail and it rests on a brown foreground. Chen Man has brought in a poster with elephants, birds and other animals, recalling Noah's ark. Motifs of waves and fish decorate the main figures. The Big Fortune by Uyu Xiangdang brings in two fish with fascinating scalloped designs on the body. Dots and lines decorate it. On one side is a crane bringing in peach flowers and on the other side are two children playing under a tree. The peeping sun is seen in the backdrop. This is in red, brown and black.

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of China's reform is the work of Zhou Ming. This presents a huge woollen mat bearing the words "Open". The poster by Tian Duanhong introduces waves, boats and fish. This is in bold sweeps of lines and curls. Tian 's other piece shows flying cranes in black and white. In the background are blue and yellow umbrellas and flowers against a beige setting.

The poster celebrating the 5th anniversary of the return of Macao by Li Fan presents a flower with burning candles. Both the flowers and candles are pink, set off by green. Image of Cheng Du by Hu Shaozong brings in swirls of black presenting the image of a chair. Exhibition of Chinese Calligraphy shows a thick brush that is held upside down, bearing a pot of black ink.

Happiness by Tong Jinpeng presents a woman in gold and red. She is smiling and bears a fan with the design of a phoenix. Yoga by Li Fan brings in a figure, emerging from flower petals. The form appears to emerge from a leaf. Gate by Li Donshang shows a boy skating, with doors opening up at the sides, ushering in figures from the pages of history.

The exhibition continuing till May 23, is sure to generate interest in contemporary Chinese art.
