3 cops, 2 officers of Khayer Group chargesheeted

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday submitted a charge sheet accusing three police officials, including officer-in-charge (OC) of Fatulla Police Station and two officers of Abul Khayer Group. The investigation officer filed the charge sheet in the Magistrate's Court in Narayanganj accusing the offenders of demanding a bribe of Tk 22 lakh to conceal the incident of seizing substandard wheat worth Tk 19 crore from a godown. The acused are OC Ashraful Islam, two Sub-Inspectors Enamul Haque and SM Siraj Al Mahmud, Assistant General Manager Mostafizur Rahman and Assistant Manager Zakir Hossain (human resources) of Shah Cement of Abul Khayer Group. All the accused are now in prison. According to charge sheet, Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Mazharul Mannan with the help of law enforcement agencies seized the substandard wheat while unloading at the godown of Afsar Oil Mill near the river Buriganga on the night of January 29. Smile Food products, an associated organisation of Abul Khayer Group, was the importer of the consignment. Immediately after the incident, police filed a case as plaintiff under the Special Power Act 1974. The police officials demanded the bribe promising to erase the name of the Managing Director of Abul Khayer Group Abu Sayeed Chowdhury, weaken the case and release the seized consignment. The two accused officials paid the money as per demand. Rab-11 Deputy Assistant Director Abu Sadek filed a case with Fatulla Police Station against the five on February 5.
