Barclays English Premier League
Ferguson in bullish mood
Afp, London
Sir Alex Ferguson backed Manchester United to retain the Premiership next season as his side's title celebrations got into full swing on Sunday. United skipper Gary Neville lifted the league trophy together with Ryan Giggs following the champions' 1-0 defeat against West Ham at Old Trafford. Ferguson's team is confident the experience of winning the English crown for the first time in four years will breath new life into the likes of Paul Scholes and Giggs and boost the confidence of his young stars. "We have got a young squad and we can definitely win it again," he said. "Winning is a fantastic elixir of life. It's gives you something extra and I think they will go on and do more next year. "It is a fantastic achievement by the players at the club. We are the best team in the country and play the best football. "When you see the trophy in our hands you really know you have achieved." Chelsea finished six points behind United, who they face in the FA Cup final on Saturday, after drawing 1-1 with Everton - a result that ensured the Blues equalled Liverpool's record of 63 consecutive unbeaten home league games. John Obi Mikel added to manager Jose Mourinho's woes as he limped off with a hamstring injury that makes him a doubt for the Wembley showpiece. The Nigerian joins Ricardo Carvalho on the list of possible absentees, with Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko already sidelined. Mourinho said: "After losing Mikel we have 15 players for Wembley, so maybe I will have two goalkeepers on the bench and Hilario is not a bad midfield player, so maybe he will give me a hand." Mourinho insisted the pain of missing out of the title will drive his side next season. "I am very happy that we are not happy and that is motivation for next season," he said. "We want more. "In such a big football country and in such a difficult league it is not easy to be second, especially with the problems we have had."
