Charges framed against Mamun for failure to submit wealth report
Tarique shown held in extortion case

A Dhaka court yesterday framed charges against Giasuddin Al Mamun, a close friend of BNP leader Tarique Rahman, in a case filed against him for not submitting his wealth statement to the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC).

Tarique was shown arrested in connection with extortion of Tk 4.89 crore from a construction firm owner while the police pressed charges against Jatiya Party (Manju) leader Anwar Hossain Manju in a criminal case.

Another Dhaka court will decide today whether charges will be framed against former minister Nazmul Huda in an arms case.

CHARGE FRAMED AGAINST MAMUN
ACC Assistant Director SMM Akhter Hamid Bhuiyan filed the case on April 5 with the sessions judge's court seeking an arrest warrant against Mamun for not submitting his wealth statement to the commission within the stipulated time.

Following the case, the court issued arrest warrant against Mamun and directed the authorities concerned to send a copy of the arrest warrant to the police station concerned. It also directed the police station to submit a report to the court within the next scheduled date.

The court fixed May 17 for trial of the case and summoned complainant and other witnesses to appear on the scheduled date.

As Judge Mohammad Ashraf Hossain of the Fifth Special Court, set up at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar MP Hostel, read charges against Mamun, he pleaded not guilty and sought justice from the court.

On February 18, the ACC directed Mamun to submit his wealth statement within 72 hours, but neither he nor any representatives on his behalf submitted the statement.

TARIQUE SHOWN ARRESTED
Tarique was shown arrested in a case filed for extorting Tk 4.89 crore from a construction firm owner.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mamun Al Rashid passed the order following a petition to show Tarique arrested in the case filed by Abu Shahed Sahel, coordinator of Aclrcl, a sister concern of Reza Construction and Al-Amin Construction, with Gulshan Police Station on May 4.

According to the complainant, Mamun extorted Tk 4.89 crore from him on different dates between 2004 and 2006 in cash and cheque with the assistance of Tarique.

In the FIR, the plaintiff said he could not dare to file any case against Mamun at that time fearing reprisal and added that he now lodged the case as situation has changed.

Earlier, Mamun confessed to a magistrate where he involved Tarique with the extortion, the investigation officer (IO) of the case said.

CASE AGAINST HUDA
After hearing both the prosecution and the defence on the discharge petition, Judge Azizul Haq of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court fixed today for order on charge framing against former communications minister Nazmul Huda in an arms case.

Dhanmondi police on April 10 pressed charges against Huda for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition.

The joint forces arrested the former minister on February 4 and seized a revolver, 14 bullets, a huge amount of local and foreign currencies, four passports and a mobile phone from his Dhanmondi residence.

CASE AGAINST MANJU
Dhanmondi police yesterday pressed charges against Manju in a case filed for possessing contraband liquors in his residence.

Sub-Inspector Amirul Islam, who is also the IO of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate showing 12 people as prosecution witnesses.

On March 8, joint forces raided Manju's Dhanmondi residence and seized 21 bottles contraband liquors. Later, a case under the Narcotics Control Act was filed against him with Dhanmondi Police Station.

Following the case, Manju obtained bail from the High Court.

The same court yesterday adjourned the charge hearing of an arms case against the detained former BNP lawmaker Salahuddin until today following a time petition by the defence lawyers.

The joint forces on February 4 seized weapons and foreign currencies along with nine diplomatic passports and eight other Bangladeshi passports, 23 mobile phone sets, videocassettes, compact discs, shotgun licence during a raid at the former lawmaker's house in the capital in a bid to arrest him.
