Schoolteacher becomes victim of Rab official's vindictiveness

Delwar Hossain Dilu, a primary school teacher who was claimed by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) to have been killed in a "crossfire" early Sunday, was rather a victim of a Rab official's vindictiveness, claimed Dilu's relatives and colleagues.Terming Dilu's death a "cold-blooded murder", they said the Rab official had enmity with Dilu over the murder of his elder brother three years ago and killed Dilu to take revenge. At a press conference yesterday at Radhanagar Non-Government Primary School, where Dilu was a teacher, his uncle Abul Kashem said Rab member Ashraf Ibne Sayeed of Bandbil village of Alamdanga upazila in Chuadanga came to the house of Dilu with a team on Saturday around 12:00 noon and picked him up. Later, a Rab press release said Dilu, 37, died in "crossfire". The Rab told local journalists that they had information that a group of criminals were holding a secret meeting behind a petrol pump near the Bandbil rail gate. When they reached there, the "criminals" opened fire on the Rab team. The law enforcers retaliated and the gunfight continued for half an hour. Later, the Rab found Dilu's dead body there. The law enforcement agency described Dilu as a top cadre of the outlawed Biplobi Communist Party. Dilu was accused along with 12 others in the killing of Sayeed's brother Bokul, a night guard of the Agrani Bank Kumarkhali branch, on March 26, 2002. Sayeed filed a case with the Islamic University Police Station on March 27, 2002, without naming Dilu. His name was also not included in the charge sheet of the case. A relative of Bokul mentioned Dilu's name during the hearing of the case at a magistrate's court. Dilu was later granted bail and he appeared before the court regularly--last time on January 16. Dilu's relatives claimed that Sayeed used to threaten Diul's family with dire consequences. His colleagues and people of Radhanagar village claimed that Dilu was not involved with any outlawed party and demanded judiciary inquiry into the incident. Radhanagar Non-Government Primary School Headmaster Aminul Islam, Assistant Headmaster Taizuzzman, advocates Anup Kumar Nandi and Harunur Rashid attended the press conference. The Rab, however, refused to make any comment on the issue. They did not also specify which Rab team went to Dilu's house.
