Firearms seized as anti-crime drive continues

Around 2,500 people were arrested on various charges in the ongoing countrywide anti-crime drive during the last 24 hours ending at 10:00pm yesterday.A press release of the home ministry said that police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) detained 2,001 people that include 31 fugitive convicts, 1,015 facing arrest warrants and 955 for other charges. The army held 239 people in the last 24 hours ending at 6:00am yesterday, said the release. Police and Rab members also recovered 14 firearms, 17 other weapons and 155 rounds of ammunition. In Netrakona, the joint forces of police and army arrested seven people including four BNP men from Monday night till yesterday evening, reports our correspondent. They are -- Purbadhala upazila Juba Dal president Deluar Ahmed Darpan, 35, upazila Tanti (weaver) Dal president Enamul Haque Halud, 40, upazila JCD president Shamimul Islam Shamim, 25 and former assistant secretary of the upazila BNP Anwarul Islam Anwar, 40. The joint forces also arrested Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist Jahid Hasan Kanchon, 35 and listed criminals Mir Hossen Miru, 25 and Abdul Jabbar, 27 of Goalakanda village under the same upazila. In Tangail, four, including two BNP men and an outlaw, were held by the joint forces during raids in different upazilas in the last 24 hours, sources said. The army personnel on Monday night held Abul Kashem Kachhed, president of Mirzapur upazila unit Sramik Dal and also of Mirzapur municipal unit of BNP, and his son Rashed Miah, organising secretary of Mirzapur Rickshaw Sramik Union, sources said. Rab personnel yesterday arrested Dulal, a member of the outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Red Flag), from Chinakhali village in Sadar upazila, and Joinal from Biswas Betka area in Tangail town, Rab sources said. In Bogra, five people were held by Rab yesterday noon, including former joint secretary of Bogra District BNP Noor Mohammed and his two brothers for their alleged involvement with illegal alcohol business. Rab also recovered 36 bottles of alcohol from their possession. Noor and his accomplices had been running the illegal alcohol business behind a homeopathy business in the north Bengal region for the past 15 years, Rab sources said. Milu Das and Mahfuzur, employees of Noor, were also picked up by Rab at Phulbari area in Bogra town. In Moulvibazar, the joint forces arrested 28 people in connection with the Monday night's incident of snatching a pistol from a Rab member in Gandhichhara forest area of Srimangal upazila, reports UNB. SI Manna went to the area on that night in the guise of a gunrunner to arrest alleged criminal Kamal and his accomplices. While he was talking to the criminals, they identified him as a Rab member and snatched his pistol after beating him up. Later, police and Rab personnel launched a massive hunt in the area and arrested the 28 people, including Kamal's accomplices and family members, but Kamal could not be captured. In Natore, Mahidul Islam Nabab, joint secretary of Natore municipal BNP, was arrested from the central mosque area yesterday morning, reports BSS quoting police. He was a wanted criminal in police list, the law enforcers said.
