Children of river islands
Cultural Correspondent
The lives of river island children come out in ruthless clarity through the eyes of photographer Mahmud in his latest book of photographs -- 20 Villages: Kurigram-The Children of the River Islands of Brahmaputra-Dudhkumar-Dharala and Teesta. The book was officially launched on December 9 at the bookstore etc (Gulshan branch).Typical to book of photographs, this one has text explaining each image. For instance depicting a woman covered from head to toe walking on the char, A wedding song has the following text attached with it Ever since I got married and came here as a bride I've spoken not a single word to anyone. I walk silently covering my head with the end of my sari... In the photograph Cowboys of Char Korail, Barisal, Chilmara, a young boy is seen tending to the needs of his cow. The text attached is Cows are the most important form of wealth on river islands. They guarantee that you will have enough rice, lentils, salt....Boys can look after cattle; this is more important than sending them to school. In the words of the photographer himself, These children are known as 'shadow children'. Government agencies, NGOs or even general people don't go to the river islands often. While the street children in the cities get certain privileges, the river island children are completely ignored. This is my own modest way of highlighting their lives. Priced at Tk 800, the photographs in the book have been shot between 2001 to 2005. Representatives from partner organisations (including Actionaid, CONCERN, Chhinnamukul Bangladesh, Terre des Hommes, Matri, Map Photo Agency) involved in this project were also present to talk about the work their respective organisations were doing to empower river children and tackle poverty in their communities. River life Bangladesh, Our world-Women in Bangladesh, Oritto and Monsoon are some of the other works done by Mahmud over the years.
